I have 4 aces
And I was/am one of the lucky ones. I always had a warm bed to sleep in,
food to eat, clean clothes.
But as I remember it, I lived eight different places within two years,
rarely with my mom.
The only reason I know that is because my counselor, that my doctor recommended, gave me homework our first visit.
It was to write my history to the best of my recollection.
That opened my eyes. No wonder!
It feels like all my life I’ve been surrounded by people that have made poor choices that negatively affected those around them.
When I think of all the children that carry the burden of that their entire life... well it’s exhausting.

Adverse childhood experiences
CDC - Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. 24/7: Saving Lives, Protecting People
What are adverse childhood experiences?
Adverse childhood experiences, or ACEs, are potentially traumatic events that occur in childhood (0-17 years).
How big is the problem?
ACEs are common.
About 61% of adults have experienced at least one type of A.C.E,
1 in 6 reported they had experienced four or more types of ACEs.
Women and several racial/ethnic minority groups are at greater risk for having experienced 4 or more types of ACEs.
ACEs are costly. The economic and social costs to families, communities, and society totals hundreds of billions of dollars each year.
ACEs are linked to chronic health problems, mental illness, and substance misuse in adulthood. ACEs can also negatively impact education and job opportunities. However, ACEs can be prevented.

Childhood trauma impacts millions of Americans, and it’s having devastating consequences
- special correspondent, cat wise:
"Everyone is impacted differently by life events, but when we talk about childhood trauma, which is a broad term, we're talking about experiences that take a lasting emotional and/or physical toll. And in the middle of a pandemic, kids today are increasingly vulnerable." - pediatrician and California surgeon general, NADINE Burke Harris: "We're seeing increased rates of domestic violence, increased rates of substance use and abuse, increased rates of mental health concerns and mental health disorders. We also are seeing a dramatic reduction in reports of child maltreatment, which is not a good thing."
